What an amazing day! My family is blessed to own a lake house property in northern Wisconsin, Lakewood to be exact. As a child I grew up here every weekend, running wild in the woods and spending the days in the water. We used to come up here with our family camper every weekend in the summer.
Around middle school we decided to finally build a lake house on the property. Years of blood, sweat, and tears later it is getting close to done! (There was a small couple year detour while my Dad built his dream garage BEFORE my mom got her kitchen cabinets. I thought for sure we were headed into a family war when she did not her her kitchen first) So while most of the weekends are spent enjoying the property and the water there is plenty of work to do! I will fill you all in on the years of building our dream lake house later; but lets focus on today!
My son, Wyatt, is full of boundless energy. He is the most inquisitive and spunky five year old that I know. (I like to think our adventures have given him a healthy respect and love of anything involving the outdoors.) So today did not start any different. He sprints out of bed talking a mile a minute and is still talking everyone’s ears off right now. Thankfully Nona (my mom) and Grandpa are also here this weekend to entertain him; or should I say for Wyatt to entertain them!
We got in some good swim time in this morning. The lake has came up 20 inches since last year! The water has not been this high since I was a baby! Wyatt has had to get a bit braver at swimming since the water is so deep by the dock. Lucky for us we have always drilled water safety he is very good at wearing his life jackets anytime near the water. Today swim time involved jumping off the dock slightly farther out than he had the last time we are up here. At this rate it will only take a couple more years before he will jump directly off the end! Haha! He also did this all while wearing his full snorkel gear so “he could see where he was jumping”. It was quite a sight, his little blue mohawk topping off the ensemble.
When he got tired of swimming we headed into Lakewood to check out a few of his favorite spots. The Sweet Memories Candy Store being one of them. If you have never had the chance to check out the candy store in Lakewood, Wisconsin, you are missing out! They have an amazing selection of goodies for both kids and adults, and you can enjoy a nice cold scoop of ice cream as well! That reminds me I stashed some nice licorice for me where the munchkin cant eat it all…
Next up was the Lakewood local sporting goods store, for fireworks and fishing supplies. This family ran business is one of our favorites. They are so friendly, even their dog that roams the shop! Wyatt had to get his usual smoke bombs and snaps and talked me into a parachute fire work that has a “real” guy attached to it. I also took time to stock back up the family tackle box that had been sorely neglected. I am not a fishing expert, since my usual method is a worm and a bobber, but rumors of some big fish in our lake has Wyatt ready to reel in a monster.
After dinner, we headed out on the boat with Nona and Grandpa in an attempt to catch a world record fish. My dad is usually working on some project constantly so it was nice for him to take a break and join us. My mom read a magazine and was in her happy place relaxed in the boat. Wyatt caught a fish on his first cast! A little blue gill and he was in the lead. We struck out the rest of the night but we definitely fed many fishes our worms since our lines were often empty when we reeled them in! We all had a nice time out on the water, fishing until we could not see our bobbers anymore. The sun set over the lake and it would be hard to argue that there was anywhere else we would rather be.
While we did not explore any new places today, we did sure enjoy the time at one of our favorite places. As the day winds down, my parents and I are enjoying some wine and old records on the record player and Wyatt is engrossed in fishing videos on YouTube. The weather is nice enough to have windows open and the red sunset promised us a nice day tomorrow!
Sleep tight fellow adventurers!
